It has always puzzled me that The Roman Catholic church does not forcefully discipline their adherent lawmakers that support abortion rights. Guys like Tom Daschle, Joe Biden, my worthless Senator Mary Landrieu, Nancy Pelosi, and hundreds of others on the national, State, and local levels of government...while maybe not advocates for that dastardly criminal practice, clearly are not willing to follow their church teachings, and decry it...even less willing to move against it legislatively. In truth, some of them are all for it, clearly in violation of their church doctrine.
Now, I'm not talking theocracy here, but the responsibility of any church is to speak prophetically to the nations, to call evil "evil,"..."to speak truth to power" if you will.
This article Catholic bishops will fight Obama on abortion is interesting. The whole article is worth a read. I really wonder...If communion was denied to pro-choice Roman Catholic legislators by their Bishops, would it change their political behavior? I wonder...
Read the whole article. The lead quote:
BALTIMORE (AP) - The nation's Roman Catholic bishops vowed Tuesday to forcefully confront the Obama administration over its support for abortion rights, saying the church and religious freedom could be under attack in the new presidential administration.
In an impassioned discussion on Catholics in public life, several bishops said they would accept no compromise on abortion policy. Many condemned Catholics who had argued it was morally acceptable to back President-elect Obama because he pledged to reduce abortion rates.
And several prelates promised to call out Catholic policy makers on their failures to follow church teaching.
I'm not a Catholic anymore but still follow what's happening. After 30 years in the wilderness going ever further down the left turn in the road, it seems that the new pope is putting a stop to it. He is emphasizing traditional Catholic conservatism and inspiring the church in America to stand up for what it right.
ReplyDeleteI sure hope so Patrick. At this point, all the hope we have to reverse this mass murder is for elected Roman Catholics to adhere to their religion. I know it's a real long-shot...but it's all we've got right now on a practical level.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many elected Roman Catholics that just seem to be able to comfortably "check it at the door" when they walk into the legislative chambers.
I really do wonder whether they view their political fortunes to be more important than their religion/faith.
It would be interesting to see.
If the US Roman Catholic Bishops actually bring the hammer down, we just might find out "what's what, and what's not" in them all. (the church leaders, and the pols)
