Yep, it's a tough admission for a life-long fan of the sport. But facts is facts.
As I get older and have more knowledge of the game, follow teams more closely, and have the wisdom of season after season, I can say that I truly suck now when it comes to judging the quality of college football teams.
Saturday was just another in a long line of Saturdays that prove just that! Starting with my beloved LSU Tigers being routed by Ole Miss (in Baton Rouge)...man, it wasn't even close. It was humiliating. Just taking a cold hard look at the teams pre-game, I figured we would win at home by 3 or 7. Ole Miss beat us 31-13...but it wasn't that close. The Rebels doubled us in yardage (passing and rushing), defensively dominated our very above average running game, and really screwed up Saturday for a lot of Tiger fans (and players).
Thank God that The Mrs.' Aunt & Uncle had come to her Momma's for a visit. I watched the first quarter, then spent the rest of the afternoon & evening visiting with them and not watching my Tigers stink up the joint. It was the best game I didn't watch all season.
Then last night I sat down to watch Texas Tech (who I had tabbed as "the best team in college football," and "scary good") play Oklahoma. Now, I knew OU was good, but Texas Tech has just been frightening on both sides of the ball. They were frightening alright! OU only scored 65 points and gave up 21 against "the best team in college football."
I don't know anything about college football.
Well, it was "rivalry Saturday" in college football. At least my #2 son's beloved Ohio State Buckeyes destroyed Michigan (no big surprise there, so that doesn't count as me being right).
But heh! I did call one right...Harvard beat Yale to go 9-1. Their only loss came to Brown by two points in week 2. There is you a quality football team. Good for The Crimson...
