...coming to the fuzz near you?
Now, there has been a big debate going on down here in Louisiana about "red light" cameras that some cities are installing. I'll admit that I'm "torn" on the subject. I really don't know what I think about it, except that I'm sure it's more of a "revenue raiser" than a safety issue. But I don't like folks running red lights...and they should pay.
The anti-camera forces always bring up "right of privacy," or "unreasonable search," etc. but those are strawmen. The Constitution does not protect a right to "not be observed in public"...by any means of observation as far as I can tell.
An old buddy of mine calls those speed humps in parking lots "sleeping policemen." They sure do slow down the idiots...
But this technology is pretty interesting, and I can not attach "Big Brotherism" to it. Technology has taken "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes," and morphed it into "One cop has a thousand eyes." Interesting...

I definitely think that people concerned about these traffic cameras are overreacting. Its not like they are putting cameras in your house-just yet. This is a definite place to hold to the conservative principle of "protecting people from other people"-reckless drivers who ignore the rules of the road are a danger to everyone, not merely themselves. Still, I'd want to know what they do with the pictures they take after they are done with them. They should be destroyed.
ReplyDeleteAndrew, your "just yet" is where the big rub comes in. You have hit the nail on the noggin when it comes to the "cameras everywhere" debate.
ReplyDeleteOur great challenge as US citizens in our highly advanced technological age is to try our best to elect/hire wise men and women to oversee all of this junk...people that love liberty, yet are willing to grow with technology to help them do the job we elect/hire them to.
