I'm pretty sure the hard drive on my office computer (the one I told y'all about) is in "hard drive failure." I have searched the worldwide computer for information, and a 3 hour start-up, a clock that registers about 30 minutes off, and a self-shutdown after about an hour seems to indicate hard-drive failure.
I was thinking that the clock being out of time might indicate a battery dying, and a bad motherboard. But the more I read, the less I suspect that (and the more confused I become btw).
My HP machine is about 3 or 8 years old (I can't remember exactly...no seriously, I think I bought it about 3 years ago...I know I bought it just a few months before Vista was launched). It runs on Windows XP (which I have come to love!)
I have not taken it to a pro. Dangit, I wish my older sons were still here! Not that I really want them close around me or anything...but they really know computer junk! I mean, hardware, software, service pack junk...
Plus, I could force them to cut some of this grass! But I digress.
My thinking is if I take it to a shop, they are going to tell me that the hard drive is bad. I may go ahead and do that anyway. But if it is, should I just install a new hard drive, and try to buy a copy of XP (the thing I am familiar with, and like)?
Or, should I go ahead on and get a new machine with Vista? I understand that Billy Bob Gates has a new deal coming out pretty soon, and I TRULY do not know if it will run my old software that is very crucial to my business. (And my father's business btw. I am his "secretary," and his lifeline to the worldwide computer in his very good business...you see, I'm a good son that helps his Daddy. I'm just saying...)
So, I know that all 9 of y'all have more knowledge and experience in this junk than I do. And any advice would be greatly appreciated. It is not necessary to comment openly if you don't want to. Y'all all got my computer letter address. If you don't, there is something they call a link up there above my quite handsome picture.
Thanks! I love all y'all! And I TRULY mean that!!!
College football starts tonight, so don't bother me after dark.

Trust me, he said, very little that runs on XP will work on Vista. You will drive yourself crazy trying to download all the new drivers for you printer, scanner etc... Go to Best Buy, get an external hard Drive and back everything up now. If you wait until it dies, it will die ugly and you will lose much of the data. MUD
ReplyDeleteHey MUD, thanks! Yeah, I am looking for a new box with XP installed. My files are backed up on Carbonite though...but some programs I can't recover without shelling out new money for old programs I need. Sigh.
