AN OMEN? MAYBE...

Last night I decided to watch the World Series. I once was a big-time major league baseball fan, but over the years my passion for the game has fizzled.

I really don't know much anymore about who's good, and who's not. But the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Philadelphia Phillies must be pretty good this year, 'cause they're in the World Series...so I decided to watch.

What I saw was a real (or near) disaster. About 3 or 4 innings into the game it started to rain. It looked really cold (the fans all had jackets on). Then I saw all the fans break out the umbrellas. At that point, the ump should have just stopped play, covered up the field with a tarp, and eventually sent everybody home. But he didn't. He let the boys keep playing. Then I saw that field getting wet and sloppy (kinda like a racetrack that makes horses slip and break their legs)...then it got worse.

I felt bad for the pitchers of those two teams. Those boys had to try to pitch off of a sloppy mound (in the cold rain), and hope that their fielders could back 'em up. Things got worse and worse, and all the time I was thinking "Why in the world is the head ump letting this go on?" I mean, if it was a real sport like football, nobody would care how sloppy it got. But baseball is different. Them boys need a clean, dry field to play their game on...or everything gets crazy!

I was watching the game, and I told The Mrs., "This is nuts! It's the middle of the 5th inning. The Phillies are up 2-1. If it gets any worse, Philadelphia is gonna get the championship handed to them before the Rays get all their "ups.". Well, in the 6th inning, the Rays scored to tie it all up at 2-2. I guess it finally got so bad that the press (I mean, the ump) decided that he'd better shut the whole miserable mess down, and finish the game later on.

Whew! I was afraid that the boys that were behind wouldn't get a fair shot at winning the Series.

It's interesting to me that this took place last night in Philadelphia...the city where the US Constitution was crafted. It was a rainy, dreary night...and the umps seemed to be biased (I mean "clueless")...but some good fortune came Tampa Bay's way. They tied it up before the media (I mean, the ump) could hand it to Philly. The game was suspended at a tie, and will be finished later on when the field dries up...

An omen? Maybe...
