Mother accused of killing newborn charged with first-degree murder.
KENNER – A 21-year-old Metairie woman who police say confessed to throwing her newborn child into Lake Pontchartrain in an attempt to hide her pregnancy from her parents has been charged with first-degree murder even before the results of an autopsy have been completed, according to Kenner Police Chief Steve Caraway.
The woman has been identified as Ciara Craig of Metairie.
Craig told police that she had received counseling about the pregnancy. “She had spoke with some health care officials at some point before, during her pregnancy to see what options she (had)," Caraway said. "She actually considered abortion, (but) she was too far along, I believe is what she said. And when that wasn't an option, she tried to conceal the pregnancy from her family.”
What makes this story such a damned shame is that we've got this all handled here in Louisiana. We have a wonderful, humane, "Safe Haven" law that allows any woman to surrender an unwanted child at a Police Station, a Fire Station, or a Health Care Facility...no questions asked! All a young woman has to do is take an infant into one of those places and hand them to an officer. If the baby is delivered at a hospital, all you have to do is tell them "I'm outta here!"...leave the child, and walk away.
All this gal had to do was go to Charity (or even an Emergency Room anywhere), drop her load, get the umbilical cord thingy clipped...and leave. No one would have asked her one question. Her family would never have known she was pregnant, a baby would be alive, and she wouldn't be facing a life filled with incarceration or nearly as much guilt. It's a damned shame...
