From the AP:
CHICAGO (AP) - Funeral services for legendary broadcaster Paul Harvey have been set for later this week.
Visitation will be Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home in suburban Oak Park. The funeral is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. at Fourth Presbyterian Church in downtown Chicago.
The funeral is open to the public.
Of course the funeral is open to the public. Paul would not have it any other way. I hope that Fourth Presbyterian Church has an overflow room. They should have rented Wrigley Field. This is a post "just for me." I decided to write down some memories of Paul before I forgot them. I forget a lot of things these days.
One thing that tickled me while listening to Paul Harvey was how precise he was in pronunciation of words. He was a pro! I learned from listening to Paul that "deluxe" is actually pronounced "de-loox." And I've never heard anybody that could use the word "fastidious" more often, or more appropriately.
Inspirational - Paul believed in America, and in the rugged individualism of Americans. I remember in the late 70's, and early 80's when the country was really mired in economic mud. He was able to find stories to report of how people were overcoming...turning lemons into lemonade. He would remind us that "RECESSION RETEACHES RESOURCEFULNESS."
Wise - His newscasts were peppered with wisdom. At a certain point in my life many years ago (mid-80's), I was struggling financially...really struggling. I felt like the guy way out on the limb, and sawing the wrong way. Often, I just wanted to crawl in a hole and disappear..."Make the world go away!!!!" Every so often, Paul would do his segments titled "YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU CAN'T HIDE." Those pieces hit me like a ton of bricks. That confident wise voice was speaking directly to me...as if from The Lord Himself. I decided not to run...and with God's help didn't have to hide.
Visionary - Paul was way ahead of the curve in seeing the coming threat from Islam. As far back as I can remember, Paul did his segments titled "WE ARE NOT ONE WORLD." In those segments he was informing the public, however subtly, that the world was full of Barbarians. In almost all of these segments he reported to the nation just how different the Muslim world is from Western civilization. Honor killing...beheading...stoning...evisceration...and worse. He was ringing the bell decades ago for those with an ear to hear.
A few quotes:
Golf is a game in which you yell "fore," shoot six, and write down five.
I've never seen a monument erected to a pessimist.
If 'pro' is the opposite of 'con' what is the opposite of 'progress'?
If there is a 50-50 chance that something can go wrong, then 9 times out of ten it will.
In times like these, it helps to recall that there have always been times like these.
When your outgo exceeds your income, the upshot may be your downfall.
Finally, there are hundreds of videos on YouTube featuring Mr. Harvey. When you have some time cruise through them. I picked this one to show y'all.
Man, I'm gonna miss that guy.
