GONNA BE A LOUD SATURDAY...

Yes it is! I mean LOUD!!!

Today marks the opening of the Barksdale Air Force Base Air Show. Since the base is about 1/2 mile from my house, the show is pretty easy for me to get to. I can sit on any piece of my lot and enjoy the whole deal.

Yesterday afternoon, the Blue Angels were practicing for the show, and passed directly over my house in formation. I think that they were about 12 feet above my tallest pecan tree. The roar was truly deafening.

Poor Sadie (my yellow lab) was scared to death! She went belly-down to the ground, and crawled like a reptile to the storage room. I felt sorry for her, but it was kinda funny... Now, why you reckon the US Navy wants to go around scaring animals like that? I blame Bush. The Blue Angels schedule was made up by President Bush before he left office.

Seriously though...it really was something to see...and something to really HEAR! I didn't have my camera with me, but this is just about what it looked like...except they were closer...much closer...about 12 feet above my pecan tree.

So, the big air show is ON! It will run today, and on Momma's Day.

Add the noise of impressive aircraft to the 4 to 6 fellows that will be pounding a new roof on my house today, and it all adds up to one big earplugfest. I have some...you know the kind that you use when you're at the firing range, or when somebody snores real loud.

Fortunately, I will be gone during some of the pounding, as I am meeting two old friends for breakfast. One lives here, and another is visiting from Phoenix. I reckon he had to come to Louisiana to cool off. It was only 90 here yesterday. I haven't seen him in a couple of years, and I'm looking forward to the visit.

So, I'm gonna be busy. I'll check in with y'all later. Try to have a quieter, more peaceful Saturday than the one I'm gonna have...would ya?

  1. A day with old friends and the Blue Angels, it just don't get any better.

When I was a kid the big bomber type planes (forgive me but I don't know what they were, they were just BIG to my 8-year old eyes) flew over our farm frequently. I would always lay down on the ground as I really thought they might hit me if I stood up. So I understand Sadie's dilemma.

Those same big planes came and fed cows (just dropped hay right out of the planes) once during a big blizzard. I don't think there's a lot of people who don't realize how much the military does for us, but I learned it then. My family's livelihood would have been gone without them.

  2. Staci, you are right girl! A lot of people just take it all for granted. I've got one son in the Air Force, and another joining up with the Army (Reserve right now, but hopefully an officer eventually...when he gets out of college).

I love the military men and women...and their families. God bless 'em one and all!
