My friend Paul sent me a computer letter today (titled "A Prayer For Obama") that REALLY got me to thinking. I'll get to the prayer for President Obama in a minute.
But for now, some personal thoughts. As a Christian, I know that I am instructed to pray for those in authority.
In the Apostle Paul's first letter to his beloved "son in the Lord," he writes (I Timothy 2:1-2), “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
This computer letter really got me to thinking...and remembering. I remember once saying to a Christian brother, "Here in the U.S. we don't have a King. We have a President." This brother (we'll call him "Tim," because that's his name) replied, "No Andy, we do have a King...The Constitution is our 'King,' as a nation." And Tim was right! The Constitution is what rules our daily lives (on an earthly level), our comings and goings, our successes, blah blah blah...
So, I have prayed for our President Obama, just as I did for Dubya, Bubba, GHDubya, Ronny, Jimmuh, Jerry, Tricky Dick, and Landslide Lyndon. Even though many would like to elevate President Obama to "King," he is merely (at this point) one of those that the Apostle Paul identified as "in authority." Sincerely...I have prayed for Hussein. Really.
Now, to the computer letter from my friend, Paul (not The Apostle Paul...the fireman Paul). I know the power of prayer...especially praying the actual words of the holy scriptures. Here is the letter, which he forwarded from a friend of his:
"We were in Pigeon Forge over the weekend. On Sunday, we left to come
home. Traffic was moving slowly, and a car in front of us had an Obama bumper sticker on it. It read: "Pray for Obama. Psalm 109:8".
Mike's Bible was lying on the dash board. He got it, opened it up to the scripture, and read it. He started laughing and laughing. Then he read it
to me. I couldn't believe what it said. I had a good laugh, too..
Psalm 109:8
"Let his days be few; and let another take his office."
My New Revised Standard Version of Psalm 109:8
"Let his days be few; may another seize his position."
I am praying the same prayer, Brother!
