This is kinda' cool...

At least it is to me.  We went out to Momma & Daddy's place for his 75th birthday party this afternoon.  A good time was had by all.  Huge crowd...family, friends, etc.  And, I got to see and visit with my lovely Aunt (my Daddy's only sister) & her daughter (my girl cousin) that I don't get to see, nor visit with nearly enough.

We had a big old time looking through photo albums.  They agreed that I look almost exactly like Papaw did at roughly the same age.  But, I came across this, and wanted to show y'all.

On the occasion of my Grandmother & Grandfather's (Munnie & Papaw) 50th wedding anniversary, they received this from the President of these hyar 'Nyunited States in October of 1983!

I thought that was WAY COOL!

A couple of things struck me about this.  First of all, I do not know if someone had to notify The White House of this in order to receive a note...but they probably did.  It could have been my Aunt, or my Momma.  Dunno.  I know it wasn't Daddy, though.

Secondly, of course the signatures of President Reagan, and Nancy are just "stamped" on the note.  But, look at Nancy's handwriting.  I'm not being critical here.  But, it doesn't seem to be the standard feminine handwriting style one would expect.  Especially since she grew up in the day when penmanship was stressed in school.  Anyone my age or older will understand what I'm talking about.  It is a very odd signature for a lady from that generation.

The third thing I found pretty cool is that the letter is addressed by hand.  That was not something created by a computer, or automatically generated.  I can tell from looking at it up close and personal.  It would have been easy to slap a typed mailing label on it, but someone in President Reagan's employ took the time to hand write the address of my beloved Munnie & Papaw.

That means a lot to me.  And, I'm sure it did to them.

Man, I miss them.

I miss them every day.

That's all.

  2. Jim, you're right. THEY WERE NICE. All of them. Munnie, Papaw, President Reagan, Nancy, and the nice lady that addressed that letter (whomever she was).

    Man, I miss them.

  3. Very cool! Your Munnie and Papaw were a handsome couple. As for Nancy's signature, it is a lot like my mom's - I've often wondered if my mom had some sort of learning disorder. She is a smart lady, but her writing is way bad. As you said, penmanship was a big to do back in their day. So what gives?

  4. Thanks, Lou! Yes, it is odd in a way. But, my second and third sons are both highly intelligent, and you can barely make out their hen scratch.

  5. I'm "of a certain age" and I agree: penmanship was stressed and prolly OVERstressed during that time. I know we were graded on penmanship as a separate category when I was in grade school and I consistently got a D or D-minus in the "subject." My everlasting shame.

Great pics and Happy Birthday to your Daddy!

  6. Thanks Buck! Daddy seemed to have a fabulous time. Yeah, even when I started school in 1965, we had "penmanship" class. I always did real well at that. Not at much else...but that, yeah.

  7. Look how much your Daddy looks like your Papaw. And you looked like your Daddy at your age.

Papaw = Daddy = You! Three handsome generations, and you must/should be very proud!

So glad you had a great time and special memories.
