When I read that former Louisiana Governor Buddy Roemer was in West Virginia "campaigning" for John McCain, I had a thought or two.
I know that Buddy and John are long-time friends, but Buddy's not well-known outside Louisiana so it surprised me. Now, if y'all don't know much about Buddy, let me tell you. Buddy is quite possibly the sharpest tack you'll ever come across. He is brilliant, and very successful in the financial world.
When I began to hear yesterday that Mitt Romney had been upset in the West Virginia Republican Convention vote, I had one thought..."Buddy Roemer!"
I was right. I knew he had something to do with Romney's loss. You can read the whole article here, but basically what happened was the Huckabee supporters, and McCain supporters teamed up against Mitt Romney.
Here's a quote from the article:
"Huckabee won in the second round of voting, even though Mitt Romney led after the first round. The former Arkansas governor won with 51.5 percent to Romney’s 47.4 percent, pulling ahead after John McCain’s delegates apparently defected to his side.
But before Huckabee’s surprising turnaround in the second round, McCain delegates told FOX News they had been instructed by the campaign to throw their support to Huckabee.
McCain delegate John Vuolo said former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer approached him and other McCain supporters at the convention and told them he had spoken to McCain, and that the best thing to do was to support Huckabee in the hope that Huckabee could beat Romney in this winner-take-all state."
Now there's nothing illegal about this, or any violation of party rules. But you can be assured that any time you hear "former Louisiana Governor," you can be sure that some shenanigan is gonna follow.Roemer has already pulled some crud for McCain with the Louisiana delegation. He's a sharp guy, and I think he's angling for a cabinet post. Maybe Commerce, or Treasury Secretary. Old Buddy...I thought we'd never hear from him again.
